Comment by bliffle on Chalmers Johnson's Blowback - The Costs and Consequences of American Empire: Is America in Decline?

"But still...no solution." there's no one solution. But if you really thought about it you would see that there are several solutions that every one of us must undertake and teach our children: -abandon failed experiments. Like the Iraq invasion. -don't rationalize the irrational. Stop trying to prop up failed policies. --don't be lazy. Stop acceppting simplemeinded notions like communism and 'free markets'. Both are demonstrated failures. You have to work harder, think harder, and be more hones

By golly, Mike you're right! I did quote ol' Prof. What's-his-name in 219. The thing is, what I was quoting was the particular passage he wrote, because it supported my point of the moment, not really him, though I did of course credit him. And, he's certainly NOT my "beloved professor" I never even sat in on, much less took, one of his classes at Harvard.

You Go Pastor Wright

One can quibble about the harsh tenor of statements by Obama's Pastor, Jeremiah Wright a former Marine, but the thrust of those statements serve as a wakeup call. Take for example the following statement, reportedly made by Wright in a sermon immediately following the events of 9/11: We bombed Hiroshima, we bombed Nagasaki, and we nuked far more than the thousands in New York and the Pentagon, and we never batted an eye .... We have supported state terrorism against the Palestinians and black So

Things that have recently hit me upside the head, A few days ago I attempted to establish a better understanding of what lies behind Obama's Minister, Reverend Wright's inflammatory to some, i. e., the easily inflamed comments. I wrote: Hundreds of books have been written chronicling our fall from grace, pointing out the atrocities that we have committed around the world in the name of freedom, or democracy, or in the name of providing relief to the suffering. Bliffle's facile and far removed analysis of my thinking is very amusing. Having never met me he has arrived at insights to my psyche based on pixels on a screen. Amazing! I haven't even mentioned "survival of the fittest," nor am I talking about it. I addressed ONLY the real acts of evil that humans have inflicted and continue to inflict on each other. And I'm speaking of acts of evil performed by all manner of people, powerful and impotent, rich and poor, alike. Again, the history of humanity

Confessions of a Ron Paul Supporter

It's been a hard realization to accept that the American population will not ever "get" what Ron Paul is saying. For most Americans, it's just not the message they want to hear. Aside from the many egregious examples of how our choice of candidates is distorted and directed by the mainstream media, there have been as many instances of the new, supposedly hip, and free media ladling out innuendo, lies, and guilt-by-association to dissuade voters from a serious consideration of the issues Dr.

Bear Sterns has had to be bailed out by the Fed. What are the consequences of a world in which regulators rescue even the financial institutions whose recklessness and greed helped create the titanic credit mess we are in? Will the consequences be an even weaker currency, rampant inflation, a continuation of the slow bleed that we have witnessed at banks and brokerage firms for the past year? The Fed is still trying to convince markets that the financial system is merely experiencing ???liquidity???

Comment by Dave Nalle on Chalmers Johnson's Blowback - The Costs and Consequences of American Empire: Is America in Decline?

Perhaps we need to redefine the term 'recession'. Even Mike should be able to admit that our current situation doesn't fit the traditional criteria for a recession since we haven't had two consecutive quarters of negative growth. So perhaps we need a different term for what we're currently experiencing. It's not quite stagflation either unless the rate of inflation continues to accelerate. How about calling it a 'slump' or a 'downturn'. Those sound good. Dave

'Why Do They Hate Us?' We're Still Confused

David Bromwich, a prof at Yale, is an important voice on the left. Last year he had what I believe is the only reasonable response to Walt and Mearsheimer--impressed by the scope of their work, disturbed by their findings--and said that Elliott Abrams should be scrutinized by the Congress for dual loyalty. No, all we care about is investigating Eliot Spitzer. In the latest NYRB, Bromwich has a nice piece on the ways that Iraq and the so-called war on terror have fostered euphemistic languag

The JOHN ADAMS Experience

Having just invoked Abigail Adams in my last post, it should go without saying that the HBO broadcast of the first two episodes of John Adams last night had a strong and positive effect on me. I feel it is important to say this, because, prior to beginning the first episode, I had been exposed to a fair amount of "professional criticism" directed at both the general product and the specific lead performance by Paul Giamatti. As far as I am concerned, those critics missed the point and I thin
