Mount Saint Michel- a slice of heaven on earth

I have visited Mont St. Michel six years ago, and still I am unable to forget the experience, no holiday has been the same ever since. This jewel on the French crown is located near the French town of St. Malo near the intersection of two Northern Province in France: Normandy and Brittany. It is definitely the most spectacular place that I have ever been to! more??

4th March. St. Malo

Took ourselves off to Mont St. Michel. It used to be a small island cut off by tidal waters but now has a causeway leading to it. When I was last there, the car park used to flood every high tide! They seem to have fixed the problem now though. It??s a really nice place, it??s kind of like stepping back in time, the streets and the buildings all as they were a couple of centuries ago, however with a modern touristy scene within. Odd mixture but very nice. The focal point of Mont St. Michel is

Up the Mount in Normandy: Where?Wednesday

Truly an amazing sight, Le Mont St. Michel rises up from the tidal flats to dominate the landscape at the edge of the Normandy coast. After pushing through the crowds of tourists even on a very cold "spring" day up the narrow, steep street, you are greeted with a lot of stairs to the top of the abbey. Once you catch your breath, you can tour around maybe even seeing some monks and nuns in a devotional service and see the immense, rambling abbey complex. This place has been home to religio

The Bus and The Moon

I was 6. My mom and I were living in Paris. Our living expenses were pretty much covered by my father but my mom still worked in a sweatshop. She's a good sewer and whatever money she makes, she uses it to take French classes and travel around Europe. I long for those days, for what I remembered those days were the happiest times of my life. It was so carefree. I was in an elementary school then, since my father lived with his wife/mistress, I get dragged out of school a whole lot and traveled w

places to see before i die, part I.

There??s a tidal island about two-thirds of a mile off the coast of France, at the mouth of the Couesnon River which separates Normandy and Brittany. Since the 8th Century AD, successive kingdoms have taken advantage of the natural defensive barrier offered by the waters of the bay, which completely surround the island at high tide. This place is called Mont Saint-Michel. The island??s most prominent feature is the abbey at the highest spot, and there??s a small medieval village nestled into i

who built the chartres cathedral and what was the building used for?

Chartres Cathedral http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cathedral_of_Chartres has a good history overview. It is still used as a church for catholic celebrations. Also various concerts classical and choirs are often programmed in it. It is a beautiful medieval masterpiece and can be seen from very far away especially at night as the towers are light from the inside, once a year there is a catholic pilgrimage to Chartres. Admittedly, it was just nice to get off the wet coast no misspelling I??m on the east coast - it??s just really wet and to the interior of the continent.? As much as I love Halifax, walking outside is no fun with a chill in your bones that comes from being surrounded by cold water in winter.? I decided last semester that I wou

Full day ahead today. Bishop was in pain today---he could barely walk, needing a wheelchair to go places. While he was in his room for breakfast, Mom and I took a short walk to the old cathedral that *should* have been St Therese's parish church it is now City Hall, I think. We were almost to the steps of the church when it started to rain. Mom said to go back since she didn't want to get lost it was less than 5 minutes away! and that she didn't want to be late for when the sisters would be

Mont St. Michel

After my restless night we awoke to our host bringing us a breakfast of coffee, jam and crusty warm French bread. We packed our bags and started the short drive to Mont St. Michel. As we approached Mont. St Michel the countryside slowly closed in on a small town and the touristy signs began. On the edge of town a few Calvados distilleries were selling their wares to tourists. Over priced bottles of the liquor, distilled from Apple mash, were displayed on tables outside. As we reached the center

Mont St Michel

Mount Saint Michael. The Archangel Michael. Legend has it that the archangel appeared to the Bishop of Avaranche ? and asked him to build a chapel on top of a mountain. The Bishop doubted the angel. St Michael appeared to the Bishop not once but twice more, and still the Bishop resisted. Why, I have no idea. But on the third visit, the archangel pointed his forefinger at the forehead of the Bishop and burnt a small hole straight through the brain/skull of the Bishop. No, the Bishop didn't die,
