News Daily, pebble beach greens (AP) — Tiger Woods was wrong to criticize the Pebble Beach greens as “awful,” US Golf Association executive director David Fay said Saturday at the US Open.

Woods, who won the previous US Open at Pebble Beach by a record 15 shots by making just about every putt inside 8 feet, failed to make a single birdie in his first round of 74. He said in a television interview, and later to reporters, that the greens were “just awful.”

Woods didn’t back down from that statement following his third-round 66 that left him at 1 under for the championship.

“Well, a lot of players thought the same, they just didn’t say it,” Woods said Saturday evening.

Fay couldn’t resist making a comparison between Woods and Phil Mickelson, who shot 75 in the first round.

It was not an easy win but the Peeble Beach Greens was just for McDowell. He seized control of the game against known players like Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els and of course Tiger Woods. He in fact had tamed the Tiger this time.

On the 18th green there was full of excitement. “You’re something, kid,” Kenny McDowell, McDowell’s father said as he embrace him. It was just his time as he even surpass a surprise contender, Gregory Havret from France who shot 72.

Tiger Woods was in total disbelief because he had hoped this game would end his months of bad publicity but then it seems that will hung out for a while. Woods bogeyed five of his first 10 holes and took himself out of contention with a 75.
