SPACE – And if, contrary to our previous assumptions, the moon had formed in just a few hours and not in several years? Why is the classical theory divisive?
Theories about the moon’s origin agree that it was formed during a collision between Theia, a planet the size of Mars, and our planet about 4.5 billion years ago. Where this new hypothesis differs from the previous ones is how this debris came together to form the satellite we can observe today.
The most widely accepted theory is that the moon formed from the debris of this collision and merged in orbit for months or years. However, this scenario does not match the composition of the lunar rocks recovered during the Apollo missions. These are said to consist primarily of the debris from Theia, but analyzes conducted show an Earth-like composition.
A revolutionary new theory?
For researchers at NASA and the University of Durham (UK), there is no doubt behind this new work: the Moon’s composition shows that it formed immediately within hours as debris from Earth and Theia was pulverized into space after impact. The simulations carried out on the basis of this hypothesis give a composition with 60% material originating from the earth, compared to only 30% for the classical theory.
But to confirm this theory, other lunar samples are needed. This is also one of the goals of future NASA Artemis missions, the first flight of which (often postponed) is scheduled between November 12 and 27.
