Five years after the #Metoo wave, fallen star Kevin Spacey appeared in New York on Thursday in a civil lawsuit brought by American actor Anthony Rapp who accused him of “sexual assault” in 1986 at the age of 14, which the “House of Cards” actor denies.
The former Oscar-winning star actor was quite relaxed and smiling, dressed in a blue suit, white shirt and tie, and sat all day just feet from his accuser, Anthony Rapp, in Manhattan Federal Civil Court.
Anthony Rapp, 51 at the end of October, is seeking $40 million in damages. He’s a lot less famous than 63-year-old Kevin Spacey. In particular, he starred in the series “Star Trek: Discovery”.
Before a popular jury of six women and six men, the actors’ lawyers crossed swords on the first afternoon of a ten-day trial.
The facts date back to 1986.
Anthony Rapp is 14 years old, a Broadway actor-in-training. Spacey is also a young theater actor, an unknown, barely 27 years old.
– Meeting on Broadway –
Teenage Rapp and young Spacey briefly meet backstage at a New York theater, and the latter invites him to dinner with some friends at his Manhattan studio a week later.
According to prosecutor and presiding judge Lewis Kaplan, who established the facts in an order last June, after guests left the small party, Spacey and Rapp found themselves sitting on the edge of the bed with the television on.
Spacey then “lifts” the teen and “his hand + rubs + the piece of clothing covering his buttocks for a few seconds.” Then Spacey “lays Rapp on the bed, on his back, before lying fully clothed briefly beside and on” the 14-year-old boy.
Anthony Rapp manages to “pull himself out” and leaves the studio.
But more than 35 years after the events, his lawyer Peter Saghir accused Kevin Spacey on Thursday of “consciously” trying to “satisfy his sexual desires”.
“It wasn’t just heckling,” the lawyer thundered.
In this civil trial – the criminal proceedings were dropped after Rapp’s complaint in September 2020 – Judge Kaplan’s original allegation of “sexual assault” was not upheld.
The facts are deemed statute-barred and outside the scope of a New York State Child Protection Act of 2019, which may extend the statute of limitations.
– “Emotional Stress” –
The judge upheld the charge of “damaging the physical integrity” of Anthony Rapp, who caused “emotional distress”.
In fact, according to Kevin Spacey’s attorney, Jennifer Keller, the sexual assault “never happened.” Anthony Rapp “repeated the same false story” in the media, but “never with the police,” she accused.
In late October 2017, at the start of the #MeToo movement, Mr. Rapp first widely accused Mr. Spacey in the media, BuzzFeed News. The next day, Kevin Spacey tweeted his “sincere apologies” for his “drunken and deeply inappropriate (male) behavior.”
In his testimony before the trial, Anthony Rapp admitted that there were “no kisses, no undressing, no touching under clothing and no utterances or insinuations of a sexual nature” during an “exchange” that lasted no more than two minutes .
Two-time Oscar-winning actor for Usual Suspects and American Beauty, Kevin Spacey Fowler, full name, disappeared from screens and boards after being one of the first artists to be swept away by the global craze just five years ago became. #Metoo part from the United States.
He’s already been in trouble with the law in the United States and the United Kingdom. In London he is charged with sexually assaulting three men between March 2005 and April 2013 when he was a theater director, of which he pleaded not guilty last July.
