“Play 90 minutes with our qualities”

Eager to continue AS Monaco’s current league momentum in the Europa League, the Flemish technician spoke on the eve of Trabzonspor’s reception at the Stade Louis-II (18:45).

Hit the iron while it’s hot. That’s the aim of Philippe Clement’s side on the eve of welcoming Trabzonspor’s Turks on Matchday 3 of the Europa League (kick-off 18:45). The Monegasque coach therefore wants to surf on the current form of the Red and Whites in Ligue 1, who have won their last four games to stay in contention for first place in Pool H. excerpts.

The Trabzonspor experience

I spoke to my players after the Ferencváros game. The first half wasn’t good enough for me. In the second there was a reaction, but they punished us in transition. We will have to play 90 minutes against Trabzonspor with our qualities. And even with that, the result is not guaranteed, because they are a team with a lot of experience. They have many internationals who are used to European games, such as Marek Hamsik, who has more than 130 selections with his country (135 ed.), Hassan Trézéguet (57 selections with Egypt) or even Marc Bartra. But we will have to fight against our young lions and Wissam (smiles complicitly at the captain).

An important but not decisive game

It’s six days, so it’s not a turning point. We mustn’t look at others, but concentrate on our game, our qualities and push through our pace. In this group there are four teams with the same level. It’s up to us to prove at the end that we can be the best and only after six games will we have the answer.

I really enjoyed Wissam and Breel’s game against Nantes. But Wissam had also done very good things in Paris, for example, when he was alone in front. In the end, the game system doesn’t matter, it’s the animation that counts.

Stay on the continuity of Nantes

I’m always ambitious, I want to play better in every game. And it’s the same with my players. I was happy with their game against Nantes and I hope to see the same ingredients against Trabzonspor. I would like more automation between us and fewer chances for the opponent. But it’s two different teams, so every game has a different story. In any case, I want my players to start the game with a lot of energy and never stop trying throughout the game. If we play all the games thoroughly, it is clear that we will have a very good season on arrival.

His eye is on Wissam Ben Yedder

I really enjoyed Wissam and Breel’s game against Nantes. But Wissam had also done very good things in Paris, for example, when he was alone in front. In the end, the game system doesn’t matter, it’s the animation that counts. His treble? I’ve seen Karim Benzema miss chances this weekend, it happens to all big strikers to have ups and downs. I knew he would regain the performance he deserved. But I insist that you don’t always have to look at the stats of a striker, you also have to look at the way he plays and the impact he has on the team.

The twist in front

This is the same in all positions, whether in attack or elsewhere. In a club like ours with ambitions, all positions are doubled, it’s normal to be able to play the three tables. Same in Paris, Rennes… So far, all the players have had playing time since the start of the season, except for the youngest, Yann (Lienard) and Yllan (Okou). But we are still at the beginning of a long season, so everyone will have a chance. And it’s very good for me to have a choice.

Kevin has a lot of experience, he always works very hard for the team, even off the ball. He has a good connection with Wissam as they played and scored a lot together.

About the return of Kevin Volland

Kevin has a lot of experience, he always works very hard for the team, even off the ball. He has a good connection with Wissam as they played and scored a lot together. There’s stiff competition ahead, but we’ll need everyone in the coming weeks. Our strength today is also being able to defend as a team and Kevin represents that attitude well.

The rise of Aleksandr Golovin

So far, I am very satisfied. Sometimes he’s a bit tired on the hour or after 70 minutes, so we don’t take any chances and take him out. It is the strength of this team to be able to replace players without losing quality. And this must continue in the coming months. Since I arrived here, Golo’ has improved a lot, especially physically. Outside of games he works a lot on the ball. He has a lot more muscles now. We’ll see where his limits are, but I’m very happy with his performance.
