After a very quiet evening, Real Madrid consequently won against Shakhtar Donetsk (2:1). This, at first glance, narrow score does not reflect Madrid’s overwhelming dominance, sometimes flamboyant, sometimes managerial. Rodrygo (13th) and Vinicius (28th) scored at a very high level in the first half hour. The beautiful goal by Oleksandr Subkov (39th) didn’t change anything: The Madrid team, carried by Karim Benzema with all the good shots without scoring, stormed into eighth place.

Admittedly, the expression that a result “contradicts the physiognomy of the game” is sometimes overused. However, it’s difficult to find a better image to illustrate this very unbalanced game between Real Madrid and Shakhtar. The merengues have in fact reached an unmanageable number of situations without ever adding anything to the bill. The high number of shots (35!) isn’t even enough to highlight, as some combinations didn’t result in a hit. However, mentioning them is obvious as Madrid’s offensive blinded the Bernabeu.
35 shots for Real
However, it is the culmination of fate that Rodrygo found the opening with a close action. He benefited from a favorable counterattack at the surface entrance and fired a rather soft but sufficient shot to take Anatoliy Trubin out of the preset (13′, 1-0). The Ukrainian goalkeeper then caught up to a large extent, but was unable to do anything about the wonderful goal from Vinicius (28th, 2-0), in the end a perfect one-two with Karim Benzema. The Frenchman failed to capitalize on his few chances and shone. As usual, he disorganized a fragile opposing defense with well-considered deviations in an altruistic manner. Such was his influence that with more success he could have scored two goals and provided as many assists.

The people of Madrid then chaired the meeting, very unconcerned about the generally disappointing Ukrainians. The beautiful volley from the left by Subkov (2:1, 39th) was just a drop of water in an overall copy that came close to offensive nothing. Striving for a brief revival, Shakhtar players have been systematically caught by opposition pressing without finding an alternative.
Faced with this limited adversity, David Alaba and his team-mates settled for minimal success to cement their first-place finish in this Group F. Author of a full card (3 wins in 3 games), Real Madrid will win their qualifiers soon this week if they win in Ukraine. Shakhtar (2nd with 4 points) will fight for second sesame with Leipzig (3 pts) and Celtic (1 pt).
