Samsung pulls out all the stops on the logic chip front

Develop processors with “human-like performance”. This is now the goal of Samsung, which wants to establish itself in the logic chip market thanks to a new technological generation of increasingly “smart” semiconductors. At an industry event in California, the Korean giant shared ambitious goals for the future of its semiconductor business. The latter wants to improve the performance of their chips to the point where they can perform human tasks like humans.

Samsung System LSI Business – the business unit responsible for processor design at Samsung – is focused on improving the performance of its core IPs, such as B. neural processing unit, modem, CPU, GPU and others, with its partners, as indicated by the management of the Asian giant. During the Tech Day event held in San Jose this Wednesday, Yong-in Park, head of Samsung System LSI Business, said that today “machines need to learn and think like humans,” hence the growing importance of logic chips, or processors.

The South Korean tech giant offers around 900 products in this industry, including information processing ICs, image sensors, modems, display driver ICs, power management ICs and more, energy and security chips, argues the management of Samsung, which now wants to grow together this wide range of chips in order to be able to offer its customers a global solution.

Samsung System LSI is now aiming to improve its high-resolution image sensors to capture images that match those of the human eye. The tech giant will also soon launch sensors that can act like the five human senses. Samsung also used its platform to showcase its new offerings like the Exynos 5300 5G modem and Exynos Auto V920. A new display driver IC for OLED panels with quantum dots (QD), manufactured by Samsung Display, was also unveiled on Wednesday.

A day earlier, Samsung Foundry, the company’s custom chip manufacturing unit, claimed that it would launch 1.4 nanometer (nm) chips by 2027. As a reminder, Samsung started mass-producing 3nm chips earlier this year, becoming the first company in the industry to do so. While it’s already the largest provider of memory chips in the mobile phone space, the company also aims to be number one in the automotive industry by 2025.

Finally, Samsung has also indicated that it intends to open a memory chip research center, the Samsung Memory Research Center, in South Korea before the end of the year. This center will have overseas centers in the US and other countries in partnership with Red Hat and Google Cloud.

Samsung is the world’s largest maker of memory chips, a title it has held for more than two decades, and the second-largest maker of custom chips. When it comes to processor design, however, the company has so far largely relied on its “smartphones” and displays divisions to buy its chips.
