These queen ants live 500% longer than workers. Here’s why.

How far would you be willing to go to improve yourself? Your lifespan by 500% ? A species of ant engages in brutal colony-wide brawls to replace recently deceased queens – and the winner not only takes the throne, but receives a dramatic boost to her longevity.

When a queen dies, Indian jumping ants (Harpegnathos Saltator) argue about which worker should take her place. To win the crown it is not enough to lay eggs, you also have to live 500% longer than the average worker. Now scientists may have figured out how surrogate queens slow down their aging.
